Videogames and mediation of knowledge: Perspectives on the "Serious games"

Session 1 "playful and mediation of knowledge"

• The seminar aims to expand opportunities for research on "serious games". Indeed, while the industry has a growing economic and social importance and that the "game studies" are beginning to deploy many mainly empirical analysis, the French research in the social sciences have still not invested this question.

Different definitions have been attempted and backward on the oxymoron between "serious" and "game", noting the importance of the original intent of the producers but also users, thus highlighting the role of spheres of activities in which "serious games" are designed and mobilized. Whether serious uses of classic video game or games designed specifically for ease of reference, "serious games" can be grasped by a significant number of approaches.

The "serious games" are found in mobilized various sectors (communication, marketing, information, recruitment, training, education, etc..) and by various actors (institutions, enterprises, politics, etc..). Thus, by the specifics of these objects, their multiple uses, the various sectors covered, research on "serious games" brings to invest in the technical, semiotic, organizational, pedagogical, ideological, etc.. It also calls to address the question of the relationship between media and learning. Thus, this seminar aims to provide interdisciplinary perspectives on these devices and entertaining media for education, training, information, marketing, etc..
